This superb, unbroken Orthoceras fossil slab is a breathtaking relic from the prehistoric ocean floor, dating back over 400 million years. Discovered in the Anti-Atlas Mountains of Southern Morocco, this Devonian-period specimen features an array of Orthoceras fossils, all naturally aligned by ancient ocean currents before fossilization. Among the well-preserved belemnites, a tremendous-sized fossil cuts across the slab’s center, making this an extraordinary display piece. Expertly polished to enhance the details, this slab offers a dramatic, high-relief view of the prehistoric creatures, showcasing their intricate tentacles, ink sacs, and distinct chambered shells. A true museum-worthy addition to any fine fossil gallery.
Interesting Facts
Orthoceras were ancient cephalopods, distant relatives of modern squid and octopuses, with external shells for buoyancy control.
These creatures lived in marine environments during the Devonian period, over 400 million years ago.
The hollow internal chambers of their shells were separated by walls called septa, allowing them to regulate their position in the water column.
Orthoceras fossils are often found aligned in the same direction, as they were swept and buried by underwater currents before fossilization.
